Creamy Potato Gratin

  • Author: Jennie Graham
  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 10-15 minutes before serving 1x

Description

A rich and indulgent creamy potato gratin featuring layers of tender russet potatoes baked in a luxurious garlic-infused cream sauce and topped with golden Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds starchy potatoes (Russets)
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prep and Preheat: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Generously grease your baking dish with butter, ensuring all surfaces are coated to prevent sticking.
  • Slice Potatoes: Peel potatoes and slice into uniform 1/8-inch rounds. Consistent thickness ensures even cooking throughout all layers.
  • Prepare Cream Base: In saucepan, combine heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Heat over medium heat until warmed and fragrant, but don’t let it boil.
  • Layer and Build: Arrange potato slices in overlapping layers. Pour cream mixture over each layer, sprinkle with cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used.
  • Initial Bake: Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. This steams the potatoes and ensures they cook through completely.
  • Final Golden Finish: Remove foil and bake 20-30 minutes more until top is golden brown and bubbling. Test doneness with a fork – it should pierce easily.
  • Rest and Serve: Let cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the cream to set slightly and makes serving much easier.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes just before assembling to prevent browning and ensure the freshest taste and best texture.
  • Test your cream temperature with your finger – it should be warm but comfortable to touch, preventing curdling.
  • Save some cheese for the final layer to create that beautiful golden-brown top that makes this dish so appealing.
  • Let the gratin rest after baking – this crucial step allows the cream to thicken and makes serving much neater.
