  • Author: Jennie Graham

Description

A delightful autumn dessert combining sweet figs with tender apples under a golden, buttery crumble topping that’s ready in just 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 300g apples, peeled and cored
  • 350g fresh figs, stems removed
  • 2 tablespoons caster sugar (superfine)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 175g plain flour (all-purpose)
  • 125g light soft brown sugar
  • 50g porridge oats
  • 125g cold butter, from fridge

Instructions

  1. Wash the figs and cut off the stem, then cut into quarters
  2. Peel and core the apples, cutting into pieces half an inch or 1.5 centimeters
  3. Place apple pieces in a bowl and stir in lemon juice to coat completely
  4. Arrange figs and apples in pie dish in an even layer
  5. Mix caster sugar with cinnamon and sprinkle over fruit
  6. Combine flour, oats, and brown sugar in a bowl
  7. Cut cold butter into small pieces and rub into flour mixture until combined
  8. Spread crumble mix over fruit in an even layer
  9. Preheat oven to 220°C/425°F/200°C Fan/Gas 7
  10. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown on top

Notes

  • Choose figs that yield slightly to pressure but aren’t mushy for the best texture
  • Cut fruit pieces uniformly to ensure even cooking throughout the crumble
  • Don’t skip the lemon juice as it prevents apple browning and adds brightness
  • Use cold butter and rub into flour mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs
  • Fresh figs work best, but dried figs soaked in warm water for 15 minutes can substitute
  • The crumble can be assembled up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerated before baking
