This authentic Juneteenth Okra Tomatoes recipe combines tender okra with stewed tomatoes and smoky turkey bacon for a traditional Southern side dish that celebrates freedom and heritage.

- 2 slices halal turkey bacon
- 1 pound frozen okra, thawed and sliced
- 1 small onion, chopped
- ½ green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 (14.5 ounce) can stewed tomatoes
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place turkey bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly browned and crisp. Drain on paper towels, then crumble onto a plate and set aside.
- Add okra, onion, pepper, and celery to the same pan with bacon drippings. Sauté for 8-10 minutes until vegetables are tender and lightly caramelized.
- Add stewed tomatoes with their juice, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir for 5-7 minutes until tomatoes are heated through and flavors have melded together.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Transfer to serving dish and garnish with crumbled turkey bacon before serving.
Notes
- Pat okra dry after thawing to reduce sliminess and achieve better browning
- Cut vegetables into similar sizes for even cooking
- Save the bacon drippings for incredible flavor
- Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce for a spicy kick
- Fresh okra can be used – just increase cooking time by 5 minutes
