Description
This traditional Juneteenth Sweet Potato Pie combines roasted sweet potatoes with warm spices for a smooth, creamy dessert that celebrates African American heritage and freedom.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (about 2 large potatoes)
- 1¼ cups sugar
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1¼ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 3 teaspoons bourbon (optional)
- 11 tablespoons room temperature butter, diced
- 2 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 unbaked pie crust
- ¼ teaspoon salt plus a pinch
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease sweet potatoes, wrap individually in foil, place in baking dish. Bake 45-55 minutes until very tender. Skins should slide off easily when done.
- Mash sweet potatoes, then transfer to food processor. Add remaining ingredients. Process until completely smooth. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.
- Bake 45-55 minutes until center no longer jiggles. Pie may puff up during baking but will deflate when cooling. Cool completely, then refrigerate 2-3 hours until set.
Notes
- Choose orange sweet potatoes over white varieties for deeper flavor and traditional color
- Let butter come to room temperature naturally for easier blending – cold butter creates lumps
- Test pie doneness by gently shaking – the center should move slightly as one unit, not ripple
- Cover crust edges with foil strips if browning too quickly during the long baking time
- Make filling one day ahead and refrigerate – flavors meld beautifully overnight before baking
