Philly Cheesesteak Stromboli

  • Author: Jennie Graham
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

A golden, flaky pizza crust rolled with thinly sliced roast beef, melted provolone, and sautéed vegetables—a hearty and shareable twist on the classic cheesesteak.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 refrigerated pizza crust
  • 1⁄2 lbroast beef, sliced
  • 1⁄2 lbprovolone cheese, sliced
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced
  • 1⁄2 green pepper, chopped
  • 1(4 ounce) can sliced mushrooms
  • 2 tablespoonsbutter
  • 1 tablespoonbutter, melted
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until they begin to soften, about 3-4 minutes. Add the chopped green peppers and continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes. Drain the canned mushrooms and add them to the skillet. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste. Cook until vegetables are tender and any excess moisture has evaporated, about 2-3 more minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the dough: Unroll the refrigerated pizza crust onto your parchment-lined baking sheet. If needed, use a rolling pin to shape it into a rectangle approximately 14 x 10 inches.
  4. Layer the ingredients: Arrange the sliced provolone cheese over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border all around. Layer the roast beef slices evenly over the cheese. Spread the sautéed vegetable mixture over the beef.
  5. Roll and seal: Starting from one of the long sides, carefully roll the dough and filling into a log shape, like a jelly roll. Pinch the seam and ends to seal completely, tucking the ends under to prevent filling from leaking.
  6. Brush with butter: Place the stromboli seam-side down on the baking sheet. Brush the top and sides with the tablespoon of melted butter.
  7. Add steam vents: Using a sharp knife, cut 4-5 small slits in the top of the stromboli to allow steam to escape during baking.
  8. Bake: Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and fully cooked.
  9. Rest and serve: Remove from the oven and let rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. This resting period allows the cheese to set slightly, making it easier to get clean slices. Cut into portions and serve warm.
