Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb Ribeye steak
- 2 large Yellow onions
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
- 4 pieces Crusty bread rolls
- To taste Salt and pepper
- 4 slices Provolone cheese
Instructions
- Step 1: Prepare Onions – Thinly slice onions. Heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and caramelized (about 30 minutes).
- Step 2: Season Steak – Season ribeye steak generously with salt and pepper on both sides. Let rest at room temperature while onions finish cooking.
- Step 3: Sear Steak – Heat separate skillet over high heat. Sear steak for 4 minutes per side for medium-rare doneness. Adjust timing for preferred doneness.
- Step 4: Toast Bread – Toast bread rolls until golden brown and crispy on the outside while maintaining soft interior.
- Step 5: Assemble – Slice steak against the grain. Layer on toasted rolls, top with caramelized onions and cheese if using. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Let steak rest for 5 minutes after cooking to redistribute juices for maximum tenderness
- Slice onions uniformly thin for even caramelization and consistent texture throughout
- Use medium-low heat for onions to prevent burning while developing deep, sweet flavors
- Toast bread just before assembly to maintain crispiness and prevent sogginess
